From the Director's Desk - June 2011
Hello from the Hilltop,
As I begin my final “From the Director’s Desk,” I have been reflecting back on the past two years and am pleased to say that I am happy and proud of what we have accomplished for our student-athletes. I look out over Grappone Stadium and see the significant progress being made on the new turf field project and it makes me feel so good to know that our student-athletes will benefit significantly when that project is complete, as will the general student body as our intramural and recreational programs will be expanded and improved. Our coaches will have another tool in their belt to assist with recruiting and we will now be on equal ground as we recruit future Hawk student-athletes.
In the Northeast -10 Commissioner’s Cup race, we moved up one notch to No. 14, but I assure you that as we continue to focus on the improvement of the athletic program and, with continued support from the trustees, college administration, athletic alums and our corporate sponsors, we will see a marked improvement over the next several years.
I am very excited to report that we have re-designed the athletic web page and will roll the new look on or around Aug. 1. I think our fans and recruits will be very happy with the updated site and the new features that will be provided.
We will once again be offering Pack Network broadcasts of our home games in football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women‘s ice hockey. Please go to the Web site and click on the Pack Network logo for details on the plan, as well as how to subscribe.
The new web page, the turf facility coming in August, athletic scholarships across our conference sports, the addition of a fourth athletic trainer, the Faculty/Staff/Monk Team Advisor Program, Pack Network Broadcasting, the Anselmian Athletic Club, tailgating at home football games, six new talented seasonal full-time head coaches, baseball and softball field renovations (including new scoreboards), new scoreboards in Stoutenburgh Arena, enhanced academic and athletic awards and award nights and a Nike agreement, are all examples of the significant strides we have been able to achieve these past two years through perseverance and support from Joe Horton, Vice President for Student Affairs, President Jonathan DeFelice and the Board of Trustees. My personal thanks go out to all of them. Our student-athletes will be the direct beneficiaries of this support and, at the end of the day, that is what it is all about. . . providing the best possible experience for our student-athletes. We must not lose sight of our mission – recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes and providing them with a quality academic and athletic experience. I believe we are achieving that goal and meeting our mission and I fervently hope we will continue in that pursuit as the baton is passed from me to the next director of athletics.
As I close the door on these last two years and prepare to retire, I want to reinforce what a good place this is. Saint Anselm is special and the student-athletes we recruit are fortunate to be the recipients of the care and wonderful education they receive here. The Monastic tradition of hospitality and sense of place is so very evident and the presence of our Monks in the daily lives of all who are part of Saint Anselm College is a blessing to be appreciated.
All the best and…
GO HAWKS!
