Brian, Hudon Help Baseball Earn Friday Sweep of USciences, Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Senior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) combined to allow just one earned run over 17 innings and junior Joe Morin (Salem N.H.) went 3-for-7, homered and drove in four runs as the Saint Anselm College baseball team swept a pair of games Friday at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium. The Hawks blanked the University of the Sciences, 5-0, before taking down Rollins, 7-3.

The Hawks improve to 4-7, while the Devils drop to 1-8 and the Tars dip to 9-8.

Saint Anselm moved ahead, 1-0, in the top of the first against the Devils when Morin knocked in senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.), who had doubled to right, with a single through the right side.

The Hawks were able to provide Brian some insurance in the sixth when Morin hit a one-out solo shot to right to make it 2-0. Brian would make that stand up until the offense added three more in the ninth. Sophomore Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.) plated one with an RBI single to left, before senior Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and Morrisino came around when Lagasse reached on an error.

Brian (2-1) tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out a career-high 14 and walking one. Junior Dave Kent (N. Falmouth, Mass.) worked a perfect ninth.

Morin went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Lagasse was 2-for-5 and scored a run.

In the second game against Rollins, Saint Anselm once again jumped out to a first-inning lead as it scored three runs – highlighted by Morin's two-run, bases-loaded single through the right side. Sophomore Thomas Murphy (Chelmsford, Mass.) drove in the third run with a groundout to second.

Rollins answered back with an unearned run on a Matt Hendricks single up the middle that cut it to 3-1. The Hawks added two more in the second to open their lead to 5-1 when freshman Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) singled to center with the bases loaded to plate a pair. They extended the lead to 6-1 in the third when Morrisino grounded into a fielder's choice to second and beat the throw to first to thwart the double play try.

The Tars grabbed one back in the third when Bryan Perlmutter led off the frame with a triple down the left field line and then scored on Brett Flutie's sacrifice fly to right. A sac fly to right by senior Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) stretched the lead to 7-2 in the fifth before a pair of errors led to Rollins' third run in the bottom of the inning.

Hudon (2-0) went the distance, giving up three runs – one earned – on five hits, while striking out seven and walking one.

Morrisino went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Lagasse was once again 2-for-5 with a run.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, March 8 at 6 p.m. as they play their ninth and final game of their Florida trip against Concordia (N.Y.) College.
