Hayden’s Two-Homer Day Helps Baseball Top Concordia (N.Y.), 6-1

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Junior Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) went 3-for-4, homered twice and drove in four runs, while sophomore Clayton Welch (Manchester, N.H.) turned in another solid outing for the Saint Anselm College baseball team as it closed its Florida trip with a 6-1 victory against Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

The Hawks improve to 5-7 on the season, including 5-4 on the trip, while the Clippers drop to 3-4.

Saint Anselm scored in the first inning for the third straight game as senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) drew a one-out walk before Hayden followed with a home run to left that made it 2-0 early on.

The Hawks doubled their lead in the third on RBI singles by freshman Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) and senior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.), before Hayden smashed his second two-run dinger of the day to left to score Lagasse, who had reached on an error with two outs the play before, and make it 6-0.

Concordia finally broke through against Welch in the sixth on a two-out, run-scoring single through the right side by Cristian Fiorito. Welch would work deep into the eighth and turn it over to the bullpen to preserve the win.

Welch (1-2) allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out six and not walking a batter through 7.2 innings. Sophomore Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) would nail down the final out of the eighth, before giving way to classmate Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.), who worked around a pair of walks to toss a hitless ninth.

In 59.2 innings over the nine Florida games, Saint Anselm starters posted a 2.56 ERA. The trio of senior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.), sophomore Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) and Welch allowed just five earned runs over 47.0 innings as they combined to go 5-1 with a 0.96 ERA, .171 opponent batting average a 43/5 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Bragole (RBI, run), junior Joe Morin (Salem N.H.; run) and senior Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) were each 2-for-4, while Chandler was on base twice with his run-scoring single and a walk.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, March 15 when they travel to Saint Thomas Aquinas College for doubleheader action that begins at noon.
