COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team picked up its second-straight win with a 4-3 victory at Saint Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action in Colchester, Vt. The Hawks improve to 5-13 and 2-1 in the NE-10 with the win, while the Purple Knights drop to 0-12 and 0-4 in league games.
Senior Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.) went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI, including the eventual game-winning sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth, to lead the Hawks offense. Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) went 2-for-5 at the plate, while John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was 2-for-3 and Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) picked up the win in relief of Joseph Levasseur (Rowley, Mass.) by tossing 1.1 innings and allowing only one hit with one strikeout. Levasseur had a solid outing by throwing 6.2 innings and giving up three earned runs to go with four strikeouts. Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) pitched the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
Peter Bocchino went 2-for-4 and Joe Robertson was 2-for-3 with a homerun to lead the Purple Knights. Dan Flynn also homered for Saint Michael's while going 1-for-4. Curt Echo suffered the setback, lasting seven innings while scattering eight hits and allowing three runs (two earned) with three walks and two strikeouts.
Saint Anselm struck first in the top of the third as Marculitis and Flynn moved to second and third base following a wild pitch. Sean Doherty (Haverhill, Mass.) drove in the first run of the game with a sac fly to left to make it a 1-0 game, before Trabucco stepped to the plate and singled up the middle to plate Flynn and give the Hawks a two-run cushion.
The Purple Knights nearly answered in their half of the third as Saint Michael's attempted a double-steal with runners on the corners. Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) came up firing to second, and Joe Robertson took off for home for Saint Michael's, but Matthew Flynn's return throw beat him to the plate to end the inning and keep the Purple Knights off the board.
Flynn helped Saint Anselm extend the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the top of the fourth that scored McQuarrie.
Saint Michael's finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh as Flynn homered to left field and Joe Robertson followed a batter later with a solo shot of his own to make it a 3-2 game. Levasseur was chased from the game after hitting Steven Auger with a pitch, and Auger eventually stole second after Seve Llanio came into the game. The Purple Knights knotted the game at 3-3 when Calvin Holland stroked a single to left-center that plated Auger.
In the top of the eighth, Marculitis led off the inning with a single to right center and Flynn worked a walk. After a sacrifice bunt from Doherty to move the runners over, Trabucco lofted a ball to left that was deep enough to score Aaron Crandall (Billerica, Mass.) who had come in to run for Marculitis and put the Hawks in front 4-3.
After a quiet bottom of the eighth, Tom Hudon was met by a double from Peter Bocchino to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. A sac bunt from Robertson moved the runner to third, and Hudon settled down forcing Auger to ground to third before striking out Calvin Holland to end the game and give the Hawks the 4-3 victory.
Saint Anselm is right back in action tomorrow afternoon when the Hawks host Post University in a non-league matchup at 3:30 p.m. at Sullivan Park.
