Gates tosses complete game, but Hawks fall at Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team got a complete game effort from junior Autrey Gates (Pembroke, N.H.), but the Hawks dropped a 4-3 decision to Merrimack College on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action in North Andover, Mass.

Box Score

Gates tossed eight innings and scattered six hits while allowing four runs, only one of which was earned, to go with two walks and four strikeouts for the Hawks (8-24, 3-8 NE-10 NE). Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.) went 1-for-3 with three RBI in the setback.

Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) and Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) also went 1-for-3 at the plate, while Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Jon McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) and Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J.) each scored a run.

The Warriors (24-11, 8-2 NE-10 NE) struck first in the bottom of the first as Sean O'Neill drove in a pair of runs with a double to left center. One batter later, Matt Nicholson followed with a double of his own and Matthew Ronai rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to make it a 4-0 game with three of the runs unearned due to a Hawk error.

Saint Anselm loaded the bases in the top of the fifth on a pair of walks and a single from Flynn with no outs. After Merrimack got two quick outs, Paul Trabucco cleared the bases with a double to right field that pulled the Hawks to within one run at 4-3.

Gates did his job the rest of the way, allowing only four base runners over the final seven innings of the game on a hit batsman, a walk, a single and a double.

The Hawks worked a runner into scoring position in the top of the seventh as Connor Parent (Katy, Texas) was hit by pitch and got to third on a pair of strategic outs by Saint Anselm, but Parent could not cross home as Joe Westerman got the final out of the inning.

Flynn earned a walk in the bottom of the ninth and one out, but he was stranded there as the Merrimack closer worked around the free pass and finished off the game.

Saint Anselm hits the road on Friday afternoon in the first game of a three game set with Bentley University this weekend with Friday's first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
