SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team nearly rallied from a three run deficit, but came up short as American International College defeated the Hawks, 5-3, on Thursday afternoon in non-league action in Springfield, Mass.
The Hawks fall to 10-22 overall and return to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Assumption College for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. AIC improves to 11-21 with the win.
Tyler McKeon led the Saint Anselm offense, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Jason Turner, John Marculitis, Dan Bodi and John McQuarrie each went 1-for-4, while Matthew Flynn was 1-for-5 with a run scored. Andre Gaudet also worked a pair of walks in three at-bats.
Jonathn Dunn suffered the setback, allowing three runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work with four walks and four strikeouts. Max Hall gave up a run on four hits in 1.2 innings, with Preston Yerrington allowing one run on one hit in an inning.
The Yellow Jackets were led by 2-for-3 days from Brendan Lavallee, Andrew Ciaccciarelli and Matt Costanza. Mike Wroth earned the win for AIC, allowing one run on three hits in five innings. JD Lehouiller gave up a pair of unearned runs in three innings, with Dean Streich earning the save despite allowing two hits in the top of the ninth.
AIC held a 2-0 lead after the first three innings as Matt Costanza drove in a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the second and Matt Krause added one of his own in the bottom of the third.
The Hawks got one back in the top of the fourth as McKeon and Marculitis led off the inning with singles. Vincent Fortini followed by reaching on an error to load the bases, and Dan Bodi drove in a run while grounding into a double play to score McKeon.
AIC scored a run in their half of the fourth the exact same way, as Josh Aviles grounded into a double play that scored Andrew Ciacciarelli to make it a 3-1 game. The Yellow Jackets extended their led to 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Ciacciarelli.
Matthew Flynn led off the eighth with a single and scored on a double by Tyler McKeon. McKeon took advantage of an error on the play to move to third, and he eventually scored on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 4-3.
The Yellow Jackets answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Josh Aviles picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to push their lead back to 5-3.
Bodi and McQuarrie led off the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles, but AIC's Streich worked out of the jam, getting a pop out, fly out and ground out to end the game.
