MANCHESTER, N.H. – For the first time in program history, the Saint Anselm College field hockey team has captured the Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season Championship and the top seed in the upcoming NE-10 Tournament following a 3-0 victory over Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday night.
The #3 Hawks tie a program record for wins in a season by improving to 15-2 overall and 10-1 in conference play with the victory, while Franklin Pierce drops to 3-13 and 0-11 in league games.
Saint Anselm wraps up the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Merrimack College for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Warriors.
Saint Anselm took advantage of a penalty corner in the 26th minute to score what would prove to be the game-deciding goal. After Erin Collins played the ball to the left side of the circle, Kelsey Leblanc swung the ball over to Rose Mooney, who hit a bouncing ball that was one-timed through the legs of the keeper by Allia Connolly to give the Hawks the 1-0 lead.
Rose Mooney put the Hawks up 2-0 early in the second half after converting a penalty stroke for the home team in the 39th minute.
The Hawks put the game away for good in the 59th minute off another corner play as Mooney received the ball from Collins up top and moved it to Mia Vechhione. Vecchione split two defenders and fired a laser into the right side of the cage to give the game its final score of 3-0.
Saint Anselm held a 16-5 advantage in shots in the game while taking 12 penalty corners to just one for Franklin Pierce. Katherine Sears made two saves en route to her 15th win of the season.
