Guers helps Men’s Basketball rebound with win over Greyhounds

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Tim Guers posted his fourth double-double of the season, and third in the past five games, to lead the Saint Anselm College men's basketball team to an 81-61 victory over Assumption College on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action in Manchester, N.H.

The Hawks rebounded from their first loss in nearly a month to improve to 14-7 and 10-7 in the NE10 with the win, while Assumption falls to 6-18 and 4-13 in league games. Saint Anselm returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host St. Michael's College at 3:30 p.m.

Guers posted a game-high 20 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Hawks, while Taylor Fortin added 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals. Cody Ball chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, with Chris Braley posting 11 points and six rebounds.

Kyle Green came off the bench to score nine points, while Austin Nydegger and Harrison Taggart scored seven points apiece.

Assumption was paced by 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Patrick Fleming. Declan Soukup added 11 points, while Branislav Vujadinovic scored 10 points of his own.

The two teams traded baskets to start the game until Tim Guers sandwiched layups around a Cody Ball triple to give the Hawks a 17-11 lead with 11:30 to play. Assumption answered with four-straight points to make it a two-point game, but Guers went on a personal 5-0 run to push the lead back out to 22-15.

A Fleming jumper at the 5:27 mark trimmed the Saint Anselm lead to 25-21, and the Hawks answered with a 13-3 run to end the half to take a 38-24 lead into the break. Harrison Taggart scored five points during the run, while Chris Braley added four of his own.

A Cody Ball jumper early in the second half gave the Hawks a 45-27 advantage, but Assumption continued to hang around as a three-point play from Karl Ziegler kept the Greyhounds within 53-38 with 13:34 to play. Guers knocked down a triple on the next possession, sparking an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to put the Hawks head 64-40 with 10:45 to play.

The Saint Anselm lead would grow to as many as 29 down the stretch, and despite an 11-2 run to end the game by the Greyhounds, the Hawks cruised to the 81-61 victory.

Saint Anselm shot 47.7% (31-of-65) from the field, 40% (8-of-20) from beyond the arc and 73.3% (11-of-15) from the charity stripe in the win. Assumption knocked down 37.9% (25-of-66) of their attempts from the field, 38.1% (8-of-21) of their triples and only 42.9% (3-of-7) of their free throws. The Hawks dominated the glass, 50-30, but committed 12 turnovers to 10 for the visitors.

In a pregame ceremony, the Saint Anselm athletics department and the men's basketball program honored Chris Madigan '90 on his induction into the Northeast-10 Conference Hall of Fame this past summer. On hand to honor Madigan and his family were NE10 Commissioner Julie Rupert, Athletic Director Daron Montgomery and head coach Keith Dickson.
