WORCESTER, Mass. – Bryan Luther (Scituate, R.I) scored a career-high three goals and added an assist for four points, while Mike Richard (Derry, N.H.) added a pair of goals as the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team took down Assumption College, 7-0, Wednesday evening at Buffone Arena.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 4-2-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 in the Northeast-10 conference, while the Greyhounds drop to 1-10 for the 2012-13 campaign and 0-2 in league play.
Saint Anselm scored five goals in the first period to give them a generous 5-0 lead heading into the final two periods of play. The Hawks would add one more tally in the second and third stanzas to end the game with a score of 7-0.
Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) staked claim on a 1-0 lead for the Hawks as he scored the first goal of the game, three minutes into the contest when Jon Ahern (Melrose, Mass.) and Luther set him up with a pair of passes.
Luther struck at 6:01 of the first stanza when he notched a goal of his own as he connected with a pass from Sullivan, netting his first goal of the game, extending the Hawk lead to two.
Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn.) netted the Hawks' fourth goal of the game and his first goal of the season, past Assumption goalie Bobby Bowden at 13:33. Eric Czapka (Holland, Pa.) and Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) each picked up a helper on the play.
Rounding out the scoring in the first period was Richard, who single handedly netted the Hawks' first short-handed goal of the season at 16:34, pushing the Saint Anselm led to five.
Richard potted his second goal of the evening on a power play as he received a dish from Tim King (Weymouth, Mass.) at 9:45 of the second stanza to make it a 6-0 game. Ahern also picked up his second assist of the evening on the play.
The final punch from the Hawks came at 2:16 of the final period when Luther finished off his hat trick, getting the puck past Chris Hemhauser. Crovo and Tebano were each credited with assists on Saint Anselm's final tally.
Saint Anselm netminder Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) made 19 saves, earning his second consecutive and career shutout, while Hemhauser (22), Bowden (20) and Tyler Stillings (3) combined to make 45 stops.
The Hawks held a 52-19 advantage in shots on goal and were 2-3 on extra skater opportunities, while the Greyhounds were 0-2 on the power play.
