McKillop’s Pair Helps Men’s Hockey Past Salem State, 5-2

SALEM, Mass. – Sophomore Liam McKillop (New York, N.Y.) scored a pair of second period goals to lead the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over the Vikings of Salem State on Tuesday evening at Richard H. Rockett Arena.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 11-5-2 overall, while the Vikings will dip to 10-8-1 for the 2012-13 campaign.

The Vikings were first to score just past the halfway point of the first period when Kyle Phelan received a pass from Andrew Bettencourt and ripped a shot from the left circle that traveled towards the net and beat Saint Anselm goaltender junior Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) five-hole.

Saint Anselm had many chances to score in the first, but was unable to capitalize on any of its chances. The Hawks were 0-3 on extra-skater opportunities after one period of play.

The Hawks netted the equalizer at 1:07 of the second stanza when McKillop potted his 13th goal of the season. Senior Evan Gogonis (Northboro, Mass.) sent a pass from left to right to McKillop, at the right post, who one-timed the puck into the top corner of the net.

Saint Anselm doubled up its lead seconds later at 18:57 when junior Alex Pascal (Blue Bell, Pa.) drove from the left point and sent the puck through traffic and past a slow-reacting Ryan Sutliffe.

Senior Bryan Luther (Scituate, R.I) marked three straight goals for Saint Anselm when he netted his fourth goal of the season at 16:43 giving the Hawks a 3-1 lead. Luther received a pass from junior Kevin Vanous (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the crease and shoveled the puck past Sutliffe.

In the midst of burning off a five-minute major, Salem State's Derek Crocker tallied a short-handed goal for the Vikings at 11:11, cutting the deficit to one. Crocker, in the crease, was dished a pass from Chad Goodwin and eventually pushed the puck through Kang's pads.

With 1:37 left in the middle frame, senior Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass.) sent a picture-perfect pass across the slot from right to left towards McKillop, who one-timed the puck into the open left side for his second goal of the game. Junior Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) also picked up an assist on the sequence.

Senior John Hyslip (Andover, Mass.) found the top-shelf at 11:50 pushing the Hawks lead to three with a score of 5-2. Pascal was credited with an assist on the play.

Kang stopped 23 of 25 shots, while Sutliffe made 20 saves.

The Hawks held a 30-25 advantage in shots on goal.

The Hawks return to action Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. when travel to Vermont and take on Saint Michael's College.
