WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's hockey team clinched a share of the Northeast-10 Conference regular season championship by blanking Assumption 4-0 on Tuesday evening at Buffone Arena.
The win gave Saint Anselm (10-9-2, 4-1-0 NE10) a share of the NE10 title for the team's 10th regular season title in the last 14 seasons. The victory over Assumption (8-14-1, 4-4-0 NE10) was also the 200th win of head coach Ed Seney's career on the Hilltop and the 19th win in the last 20 meetings with the Greyhounds for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm and Saint Michael's both finished their NE10 slates 4-1-0 but the Hawks will be the top seed and have home ice in the NE10 Championship by virtue of a head-to-head victory over the Purple Knights.
Taylor recorded his first-career multi-point game with a goal and an assist for the Hawks. Antonio Marini and Sean Verrier each netted the first goals of their Saint Anselm careers, while Brendon Kerrigan also found the back of the net. Ryan Loranger tallied a career-best two assists.
Shane Joyce stopped all 33 shots he faced for the Hawks to earn his second shutout of the season and improve to 8-5-2. Saint Anselm outshot Assumption 40-33 in the game with netminder Nick Commesso making 36 stops for the Greyhounds.
Both teams tallied 11 shots in an evenly-played first period but the Hawks claimed a 1-0 advantage after one thanks to Taylor's third goal of the year. At 7:23, Taylor went end-to-end and rifled the puck in off the underside of the bar for an unassisted goal.
The Hawks added a pair of goals in the second to take a 3-0 lead into the second intermission. Taylor set up Marini just eight seconds into the second to make it 2-0. Later in the period, Vin D'Amato and Justin Longo worked the puck from behind the net to Kerrigan on the doorstep for a power-play goal at the 15:00 mark.
Verrier closed out the night's scoring 3:22 into the third, collecting the puck from Loranger and finding the roof of the net.
Saint Anselm plays the latter half of two Hawk hockey doubleheaders this weekend at Sullivan Arena on Pink In The Rink Weekend, beginning with a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) matchup with Southern Maine on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
