MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's hockey team used a four-goal first period to cruise to a 5-0 victory over Daniel Webster College on Saturday evening at Sullivan Arena to wrap up Pink In The Rink Weekend.
Ryan Spillane, Vin D'Amato, Justin Longo and Bryan Green each found the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes for Saint Anselm (11-10-2, 6-9-1 NEHC). The Hawks fired half of their 54 shots on goal in the game in the first period and got a second-period goal from Peter Sikalis to sweep the regular season series from Daniel Webster (1-21-1).
D'Amato and Longo each tallied a goal and an assist in the win, while Mike Ferraro and Nick Leonard each had a pair of helpers. In total, 11 Saint Anselm skaters had at least one point in the five-goal victory, as the Hawks outshot the Eagles 54-18.
Shane Joyce improved to 9-6-2 by stopping all 15 shots he faced in the first 53:40 of the game. Brenden Cain came on for the final 6:20 and made three saves to close out the shutout. D'Urso made 49 saves but fell to 1-9-1 for Daniel Webster.
It took Saint Anselm just 2:35 to get on the board as Spillane jammed the puck over the line after Leonard's close-range shot was saved by Anthony D'Urso. The freshman's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
A little over six minutes later, the Hawks doubled their advantage when D'Amato tipped in a Jon Pallotta wrist shot from just inside the blue line on the power play for his sixth of the year. Ferraro assisted on both of Saint Anselm's first two goals of the game.
Saint Anselm added two more goals 45 seconds apart in the latter half of the first period to take a four-goal lead after one. Longo scored his third goal of the season, scoring from the middle of the left circle after Dave Almeida held the zone and found the junior. Almeida earned his second collegiate assist on the goal, while Brendon Kerrigan tallied his team-high 13th.
Leonard was the provider for Green's sixth goal in the last seven games at the 13:42 mark. Leonard banked the puck off the left boards to enter the offensive zone, found Green wide open on the right side and the sophomore made no mistake.
Sikalis scored for the third time this weekend at 3:36 of the second for the game's final goal. Longo circled with the puck from the right circle to behind the net and got the puck to Sikalis at the bottom of the left circle for his eighth of the season, good for second on the team.
Saint Anselm is home for two games on the final weekend of the regular season on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11. The Hawks host Babson on Friday at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena before hosting UMass Boston on Alumni/Senior Day the following afternoon at 4 p.m.
