MANCHESTER, N.H. – The #18-ranked Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team rallied from an 8-4 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to defeat Assumption College, 10-9, in overtime on Saturday morning in Northeast-10 Conference action in Manchester, N.H.
Alex Pacitti scored the game-winning goal with 2:54 to play in the extra period to lead the Hawks (6-4, 5-3 NE10) to the victory.
Pacitti scored four times in the game, while James Olsen had a seven-point day with five goals and two assists. Anthony Busconi provided the only other offense for the Hawks, registering a goal and an assist.
Defensively, Brennan Quackenbush and Drew Bourdeau caused two turnovers apiece, with Chris McCormack winning 11-of-23 face-offs and leading the team with four groundballs. Lucas DeAngelo made seven saves to pick up his sixth win of the season.
Assumption (5-5, 4-4 NE10) was led by a hat-trick from Brett Jennings, while Travis Reid scored a pair of goals to go with three assists. Dan Farrell also found the back of the net twice for Greyhounds. Colby Hamwey suffered the setback for the visitors while making 16 saves.
The Greyhounds scored the first goal of the game on the man advantage as Jennings scored off a feed from Travis Reid. Saint Anselm answered with back-to-back goals from Olsen and Busconi, but Assumption scored the final two goals of the period to take a 3-2 lead after one.
Olsen found Pacitti for a score at the 13:21 mark of the second quarter to tie the game at 3-3, and Assumption took a 4-3 lead nearly eight minutes later as Patrick Ward scored. Pacitti and Olsen hooked up again with 3:45 remaining, but the Greyhounds scored three times in the final 36 seconds of the half to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
Each team had chances in the third quarter, but only Assumption scored in the period as Dan Matisoff put the Greyhounds in front 8-4 headed into the final stanza.
Olsen started the comeback only 12 seconds into the quarter off a feed from Busconi, and he later cut the deficit to 8-6 with an unassisted tally at the 11:33 mark. However, Assumption took advantage of a man-up opportunity as Jennings scored on a feed from Travis Reid to put the Greyhounds back on top, 9-6, with 4:38 to play.
Pacitti made it a two-goal game again as he went top shelf to trim the lead to 9-7, and Olsen scored only 14 seconds later as he cut through the Assumption defense to make it a 9-8 game.
The Hawks had a pair of chances to tie late in the game, but Hamwey made two clutch saves to give the Greyhounds possession back with 1:26 to play. Assumption came down on offense, and the Saint Anselm defense forced a turnover to give the ball back to the Hawks with just over 42 seconds remaining.
Saint Anselm came racing up the field, and after a timeout by the Hawks with 25.8 seconds to play, Olsen received a pass behind the net and came out up front, going top shelf to tie the game at 9-9 with 14.6 seconds remaining. Assumption would win the ensuing face-off, but never got a shot off as the game spilled into overtime.
Chris McCormack won the opening face-off of the extra frame as Pacitti came away with the groundball. The Hawks cycled through their offense a few times before Pacitti received the ball up top. The senior cut to his right before spinning back to his left, then slipped past his defender and buried the shot top shelf to give the Hawks the 10-9 come-from-behind victory.
Saint Anselm outshot the Greyhounds at a 38-29 clip and also held a slight 25-22 edge in groundballs. The Hawks also won the turnover battle, 12-7, while going a perfect 14-for-14 on clear attempts compared to 13-for-17 for Assumption.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday night when they host cross-town rival #16 Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m.
