Mercy (N.Y.) Sneaks by Men’s Soccer, 1-0

MANCHESTER, N. H. – Senior goalkeeper Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.) made two saves in goal as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell to Mercy (N.Y.) College Sunday afternoon on Melucci Field.

With the loss, the Hawks now fall to 0-3-0 on the young season, while the Mavericks improve to a perfect 5-0.

The sole goal of the game came from Mercy's Ransmond Aboagye in the 20th minute, when Aboagye was dished a pass, over the head of a Saint Anselm defender, from Ryan Flynn, and burried the ball into the back of the net past Moriarty.

The Hawks did have a chance to tie late in the 73rd minute when Brian Ayers (North Potomac, Md.) sent a corner kick into the middle of the box that drew out Mercy keeper Nick Papas. The ball was settled and slid over to the right side of the box to Jon Britton (South Hamilton, Mass.), who blasted it wide right of the open net.

Another chance for the Hawks came in the 82nd minute when Bruno Dasilva (Rockland, Mass.) came across a loose ball and sent a shot bombing over the heads of every Maverick defender, and into the fingertips of a leaping Papas, who punched the ball over the crossbar. Papas also dodged a series of bullets earlier in the game, when after two blocked Hawk shots, Alex Germaine (Derry, N.H.) sent a third shot rocketing at Papas, who again punched the ball over the crossbar.

Moriarty made two saves while Papas made seven saves to earn the win and the shutout.

Shots stood at 15 for Saint Anselm and 11 for Mercy. Juniors Germaine and Dasilva had three apiece.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, Sept. 11 as they play host to Saint Michael's College in a 4 p.m. tilt on Melucci Field.
