Saint Rose Sinks Men’s Soccer, 2-1, in 110th Minute

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Michael Kearney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) staked the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team to an early lead on Senior Day, but the College of Saint Rose rallied for a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Melucci Field in the Hawks' home finale.

The Hawks dip to 2-12-0 on the season, including 1-10-0 in Northeast-10 play, while the Golden Knights improve to 8-7-0, 5-6-0 NE-10.

Saint Anselm had a great chance just five minutes into the contest when a cross from the left of the box off the foot of senior Brian Ayers (No. Potomac, Md.) found classmate Bruno Dasilva (Rockland, Mass.), who sent a one-time blast on net that was stopped by Saint Rose goalkeeper Colan Balkwell.

The Hawks did break through midway through the 10th minute, however, when Ayers' service from the right soared into the left side of the box before being headed into the back of the net by Kearney.

Saint Rose gained the equalizer early in the 26th minute as Juan Garzon settled a 50-50 ball in the middle of the box and rifled a quick shot that deflected off the hands of senior goalkeeper Mark Kotsopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and into the right side of the net.

The match remained deadlocked into the 110th minute when Tyler Casavant received a feed from Tyler Pomakoy and chipped a ball around Kotsopoulos that rolled to the far post where it caromed into the net despite Saint Anselm defenders running to try and keep it out.

Kotsopoulos made six saves, while Balkwell stopped three shots.

Saint Rose outshot Saint Anselm, 20-8, and also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Seniors Kearney, Ayers, Dasilva, Kotsopoulos, George Lamptey (Worcester, Mass.), Matthew McQueeney (Hooksett, N.H.), Zach Wheeler (Derry, N.H.), Kevin Greene (Londonderry, N.H.) and Drew Cooper (Portland, Conn.) were honored in a ceremony prior to the start of the match.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. when they travel to take on Bentley University. Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter @STAHawks.
