CLERMONT, Fla. – Seniors Olivia Story (Middleton, Mass.) and Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) led the Saint Anselm offense with five and four hits each, respectively, on the day as the Saint Anselm College softball team split a pair of games with Concordia (N.Y.) University (W, 12-1) and Lynn University (L, 10-1) on Wednesday afternoon at the National Training Center.
With the split, Saint Anselm moves to 4-2 on the 2014 campaign, as Concordia drops to 1-4 and Lynn improves to 16-10.
Concordia put itself on the board in the top of the first as Brittany Lampert laid down a bunt single to lead off the inning, followed by a Victoria Vickerman single to right to push Lampert to third. Carly Mertens was up next for Concordia, scoring Lampert on a fielder's choice. The Hawks came out of the inning trailing 1-0, but leaving the bases loaded for the Clippers.
The Hawks scored four in the top of the third as Gauthier led off the inning with a double to left center. Gauthier advanced to third on a passed ball and scored the first run for the Hawks thanks to an RBI single from senior Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.). With runners on second and third, junior Kasey Moran (Medford, Mass.) singled up the middle to score freshman Stephanie Storro (Leominster, Mass.), who initially reached on a walk. After Moran and Boucher successfully pulled off a double steal, Boucher crossed the plate to make it a 3-1 game. To tack on the final run of the inning, Story ripped an RBI double down the left field line to score Moran.
The Hawks pitched in one more run in the fifth when sophomore Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I.) singled to score Moran, who also reached on a single.
Saint Anselm went up 7-1 in the sixth inning as Story drove in both sophomore Emily Crannell (Wilmington, Mass.) and Boucher, who reached on a bunt single and a walk, respectively.
Gauthier led off a five-run fifth inning with a double to left center scoring sophomore Julie LeClair (Taunton, Mass.). Junior Hayley Leclaire (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) followed up that performance with a single through the infield that allowed Gauthier to advance to third.
Freshman Sam Hennequin (Auburn, N.H.) cleared the bases for two RBI's with a triple to deep center field, giving Saint Anselm a 10-1 lead. Saint Anselm pushed its final two runs across the plate with a Boucher triple to score Hennequin and a Story single to score Boucher.
Junior Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) improves to 3-0 with the win as she pitched all seven innings, striking out 11.
In the second game of softball action Wednesday, Lynn grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, before the Hawks chipped in a run of their own in the bottom half, to come within one at 2-1.
Story led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a passed ball. Turner singled and advanced to second when Story raced home and was called out with a close call at the plate. Turner took third base on a passed ball and was driven in by Gauthier, who blasted a double down the left-field line. Gauthier was responsible for Saint Anselm's lone RBI on the day.
Junior pitcher Paige Cormier (Rochester, N.H.) gave up six earned runs through the five innings of play and struck out one batter.
