BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) scored two goals as one of nine different Hawks to register a point, including one of five to notch multiple points, as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team handed Nichols College a 6-1 defeat Friday night at Levy Rink.
The Hawks improve to 2-0-0 on the season, including 1-0-0 in ECAC East play, while the Bison even their record at 1-1-0 and 0-1-0 ECAC East.
Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.), Robin Yoshida (Los Alamos, N.M.) and Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) each handed out two assists, while Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) also put together a multiple-point effort with a goal and an assist. Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.), Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Marianne Kristiansen (Anchorage, Alaska) all netted goals, while Halle Kent (Lake Placid, N.Y.) tallied a helper.
Giarrusso staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead 6:33 into the contest when she took full advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity, scoring her first goal of the season off feeds from Geisinger and Foss. The assist was Geisinger's first of her career.
Nichols answered back just 4:11 later on Grace Murphy's unassisted tally, but that would be all the Bison would get as Saint Anselm answered back with five unanswered scores.
Giarrusso put the Hawks back in front just 1:14 after Murphy had tied it, receiving another assist from Foss, as well as one from Winters, to make it 2-1.
The game stayed that way until 5:56 was left in the second stanza and Winters potted a goal of her own – a short-handed tally – that widened the gap to a pair. Winters swiped the puck from the Nichols defense and beat Bison goaltender Nia Kelly with just 19 seconds left on the penalty kill.
The Hawks made it 4-1 with 2:01 remaining in the second when Kristiansen found the back of the net for the first time in her career. Kent earned her first collegiate point with a helper on the play, while Geisinger also picked up another assist.
Saint Anselm put it away in the final period behind a pair of Yoshida assists. The Hawks struck again just 2:21 into the final period as Kazmer netted her first collegiate goal on Yoshida's first helper. Yoshida then set up Herron's first of the year to close the scoring 4:34 into the third period.
Janice Michaud (Westwood, Mass.) stopped 14 shots to earn her second career win and first of 2012-13, while Kelly made 42 saves for the Bison.
The Hawks held a 48-15 advantage in shots, including 33-6 through the first two periods.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. when they play host to Manhattanville College at Sullivan Arena.
