Women’s Ice Hockey Skates Past Salve Regina, 3-1
MANCHESTER, N.H. –Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) scored the first goal of the game and added an assist and Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) netted the go-ahead tally as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team took down Salve Regina University, 3-1, Friday evening at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.
With the win, the Hawks now stand at 3-0-1 overall on the young season and 2-0-1 in ECAC East play, while the Seahawks move to 3-2-0 for the 2012-13 campaign and 1-2-0 in league play.
Saint Anselm struck first just under five minutes into the game, at 4:59, when Giarrusso connected with a feed from Jessica Galiczewski (Kings Park, N.Y.) and staked a 1-0 lead for the Hawks.
At the close of the first period, the Seahawks answered back, netting a goal of their own at 17:38. Michaela Chiuccariello picked up a pass from Sarah Markey and netted the puck past Saint Anselm goaltender Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.). Monika Borkowski also picked up a helper on the play.
In the second stanza, Salve Regina took nine shots on goal, and Saint Anselm took seven, but neither team was able to sneak the puck past their respective goalie.
With just over two minutes left in the game, Winters, at the right post, picked up the rebound off a shot from Giarrusso, and slid it past Seahawk netminder Ali Muehlbronner, to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead with 2:19 remaining in the game.
With the assist, Giarrusso made her mark in the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey record book as she tied the record for career assists with 53. The record was originally set by Molly Corl (2008-12).
The final dagger came at 19:48 of the final stanza when Michelle Conway (Medford, Mass.) sent in the puck sailing into the empty net, while the Hawks were shorthanded.
Brown made 24 saves over 60 minutes of action, while Muehlbronner made 32 saves, including more than half (17) in the third period.
Saint Anselm held a 35-25 advantage in shots on goal.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Nov. 10 as they play host to Holy Cross in a 3 p.m. matchup.
