Second Period Goals Help Women’s Hockey Past Colby, 3-1

WATERVILLE, Maine – Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) scored within 47 seconds of each other in the second period to lead the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Colby College on Thursday night at Alfond Rink.

With the win, Saint Anselm moves to 8-2-2 overall, while the Mules fall to 3-5.

Colby struck first in the game when Samantha Slotnick scored her third goal of the season at 11:22 of the second period off a pass from sophomore defender Carolyn Fuwa.

The Hawks answered back at 14:50 of the second period when Picarello notched her eighth goal of the season on feeds from Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.). Giarrusso and Foss earned her sixth and fifth assists of the season, respectively.

Saint Anselm netted the go-ahead tally at 15:37, just 47 seconds after the game-tying goal, when Herron connected with Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.).

Colby put on the pressure in the final four minutes of the game and Hawk goalie Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.) rose to the occasion and made the tough saves when it mattered.

Winters sent the puck into the empty net with 1:05 remaining to seal the win. Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Herron added assists for the Hawks on the play.

Brown finished with 24 saves, including 13 stops in the third period, while Colby goaltender Brianne Wheeler made 28 saves and allowed just two goals for the Mules.

After the winter break, the Hawks will return to action Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. when they travel to Franklin Pierce University.
