WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomores Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) and Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) each registered five points to lead the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 win against Assumption College on Wednesday night at Multi-Sport Stadium.
The Hawks win their sixth straight to improve to 6-1 overall, including 3-0 in Northeast-10 play. The Greyhounds dip to 5-4, 2-3 NE-10.
Daly and Doherty each tallied four goals and an assist, while freshman Michelle Kudlate (Waltham, Mass.) totaled four points on a goal and three helpers. Sophomore Kelly Pickett (Chelmsford, Mass.) was also a multiple-point scorer with two goals and an assist.
Kudlate's free-position goal just 1:48 into the contest gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead before her assist on Daly's first goal of the night made it 2-1 at the 26:50 mark. After Michelle Santos knotted the game at two, Pickett gave Saint Anselm the lead for good at 3-2 with goal off a feed from Doherty with 16:08 remaining in the opening half.
Pickett added an unassisted tally at 10:58 before Kudlate set up Daly again 1:37 later to expand the lead to 5-2. Amy McNeil's free-position goal at 6:51 temporarily stopped the bleeding, but the Hawks potted three more goals over the final 3:20 to take an 8-3 lead into the break. Freshman Erin Marshall (Woburn, Mass.) kicked off the run, followed by unassisted scores from Daly at 1:34 and Doherty with just 21 seconds on the clock.
Assumption scored three goals in the first 16-plus minutes of the second half, but Saint Anselm answered after each one. Daly struck for the fourth and final time just 5:10 in off a Pickett pass, while Doherty beat Greyhounds' goalkeeper Michelle Monahan at the 14:43 mark and again 2:16 later off a Kudlate feed to make it 11-6.
Santos beat freshman goalkeeper Jane Bunn (St. John's, Fla.) for the third time on a free position, but the Hawks' third three-goal barrage of the contest put the game away at 14-7 with just under three minutes left. Doherty scored for the third straight time at 8:39, with Daly getting credit for the assist. Freshman Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.), the reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, converted a free position chance with 5:40 to go before sophomore Kaitlyn Stazinski (Pembroke, Mass.) tacked on an unassisted tally with 2:52 to play.
Free-position goals from Camille Auger and McNeil closed the scoring with 1:37 on the clock.
Bunn, the current Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Week, stopped a career-best 11 of 20 shots to improve to 2-1, while Monahan made 13 saves for Assumption.
The Hawks held a slim 32-31 shot advantage, including 20-15 in the opening stanza. Saint Anselm was 2-for-4 on free positions, while the Greyhounds were 6-for-8, including a perfect 5 of 5 in the second half.
