Women's lacrosse team, trio honored by IWLCA

GRAND LAKE, Colo. – The Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team and three of its student-athletes were honored by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) on Wednesday, as the organization announced its 2017 Zag Sports Academic Honor Squads and its 2017 Zag Sports Division II Academic Honor Roll.

Saint Anselm, which received the team accolade for the second-straight year, was one of 311 schools across Divisions I, II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to be honored as an Academic Honor Squad. To qualify for the honor, a team must have posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the academic year.

"As a program, we really pride ourselves on being strong students, athletes and members of the community," said head coach Meghan Smith. "It is great being recognized two years in a row as an Academic Honor Squad. The team works very hard in the classroom and I am so proud of their hard work that went into achieving this honor."

Rachel Henderson, Marta Versprille and Jamie Traverse each were named to the Academic Honor Roll for the first time in their careers. Henderson and Versprille were both named to the Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference Team earlier this month, while all three were named to the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in the spring.

"I am so proud of Rachel, Marta and Jamie for receiving this honor," Smith added. "They are hard working both on the field and in the classroom. Balancing academics and athletics and doing both at a high level is an impressive feat."

In total, 243 student-athletes from 67 institutions collected the accolade, which requires student-athletes to have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater and be a junior, senior or graduate student. Of the 22 student-athletes on the Saint Anselm roster in 2016-17, 16 were named to either the Saint Anselm Dean's List or NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll over the course of the academic year.
