WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team endured a 9-0 loss on the road at Adelphi University in its final match of the fall season on Sunday at Hempstead Lake Indoor Tennis Center.
Jess Perkins and Kaitlin Hughes pushed one of the top doubles tandems in the region at No. 1 doubles for Saint Anselm (5-8, 4-8 NE10), but Adelphi (12-1, 11-1 NE10) dropped 16 games across the nine matches to win its 10th consecutive match since a 6-3 loss at unbeaten and NE10-leading Stonehill back on Sept. 16.
Adelphi was ranked fifth in the East Region in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released last May. The Panthers have won the NE10 Championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
At the top doubles spot, Perkins and Hughes came up against Rebecca Fakas and Karen Serina, who were ranked fourth in the region by the ITA. The Hawks' top duo hung with Fakas and Serina before eventually succumbing, 9-7. The Panthers posted 8-0 victories in the other two doubles matches to complete the doubles sweep.
In a matchup of regionally-ranked players at No. 1 singles, Fakas got by Perkins, 7-5, 6-0, in what was just the second loss of the season for Perkins. Playing in the final conference match of her career, Perkins finished her four-year career with a 40-8 record in conference play playing exclusively at No. 1 singles.
Adelphi lost just four games in the other five singles matches, two of which were played as eight-game pro sets after the Panthers had the team win wrapped up.
With the fall season in the books, the next scheduled match for the Hawks is a 3 p.m. match at Regis (Mass.) on Tuesday, April 17. Any further updates to the schedule will be posted at saintanselmhawks.com.
