WORCESTER, Mass. – Danielle Isbell recorded a career-high 31 digs and Katy Teets had a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs as the Saint Anselm College volleyball team downed Assumption, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday at Laska Gymnasium.
Jewel Hays joined Teets with a double-double, contributing a season-high 48 assists and 12 digs for Saint Anselm (15-10, 8-5 NE10), which defeated Assumption (5-17, 3-10 NE10) for the second time this season. Isbell's 31 digs were the most by a Saint Anselm player since Melissa Jewett had 32 over five sets against Pace on Oct. 26, 2013.
With her 16 kills, Teets edged closer to the 1,000-kill milestone, as she now sits on a total of 994. Catherine McCarthy also registered a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs for the Hawks, who got 12 kills from Amanda Williams as well.
Saint Anselm currently sits fifth in the congested NE10 standings, which include six teams with between four and six conference losses. With a lot still to play for in the final week of the regular season, the Hawks still have a shot at hosting a playoff match, trailing Bentley (17-9, 8-4 NE10) by one loss in the standings.
Kellie Smith had a match-high 17 kills and added 20 digs for Assumption, with Julia Goyette and Olivia Burke posting 11 kills apiece. Brenna Chrisom paced the Greyhounds with 29 digs and Kiki Romanik recorded 40 assists and 10 digs.
Saint Anselm trailed 12-11 midway through the opening set before embarking on a 10-2 run to seize control. Williams and Holly Manchester each had a kill and a block during the decisive run and Manchester finished off the set with consecutive kills.
Assumption doubled up Saint Anselm, 12-6, early in the second but the Hawks recovered to tie the set at 19-19 after a 6-0 run behind the Jordan Schamp serve. The Greyhounds won the next three points and eventually closed out the set on a Goyette kill to even things up at a set apiece.
After holding a 6-4 lead in the third, the Hawks won 13 of the next 15 points to build a sizable 19-6 lead. Schamp had four-straight aces at the beginning of the run. After trailing 24-13, Assumption cut its deficit to just six, 24-18, with a 5-0 run before Madison Sollows ended the set with a kill.
The hosts opened up a 7-2 lead in set number four but Teets had four four-straight kills as part of a 7-2 run to give the Hawks the lead. A Hays kill tied the score at 21-21 and Saint Anselm eventually brought up two match points at 24-22. Assumption extended the set and the match off a kill and block by Goyette, before McCarthy clinched the victory with back-to-back kills.
The Hawks conclude their regular season schedule against conference-leading New Haven (18-7, 12-0 NE10) with Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 11 at noon at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
