Johnson, McGuinness selected for February 2019 Hawks Soar Higher Awards

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm College Department of Athletics announced Laura Johnson and Michael McGuinness as the February 2019 "Hawks Soar Higher" Award selections on Thursday.

All-Time Award Recipients

Debuting in the Fall of 2017, the special award was created to allow the Department of Athletics to recognize individuals that are instrumental to the College's efforts to offer a first-class, transformational student-athlete experience. The awards are issued each month during the academic year to two individuals employed by the institution outside of athletics.

Recipients will be colleagues, faculty, staff or administrators who advocate for Saint Anselm student-athletes and go above and beyond in their contributions each day on the Hilltop.

Johnson is approaching her 19th anniversary on the Hilltop, serving the campus community as a cashier for Dining Services. A mainstay at the Coffee Shop on campus, she is always accommodating and cheerful with the students, student-athletes, faculty and staff, sometimes knowing their orders better than they do themselves. Johnson's radiant smile is synonymous with the Coffee Shop's signature reputation on the Hilltop.

"It's always a pleasure to see the student-athletes and all of our students, staff and faculty in general," said Johnson. "Thank you for this award, but I want everyone to know that every day I feel appreciated, because this is how you all make me feel all the time."

McGuinness is an Associate Professor in Economics and Business at Saint Anselm and has been on campus since 2002. He regularly attends Hawks sporting events at home and on the road and is a strong supporter of intercollegiate athletics on campus. An advocate for all student-athletes, McGuinness serves as the Team Advisor for the men's ice hockey program.

"It has been my pleasure to watch many great Hawks sporting events over the years," remarked McGuinness. "It has also been a pleasure to have many excellent student-athletes in my classes as well as excellent non-athlete students performing significant community service and charitable work. I look forward to seeing much more success on and off the competition sites in the future."
