MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College Department of Athletics held its annual Scholar-Athlete Academic Honors Reception and Celebration of Athletic Excellence recently, with both events taking place on campus at the Dana Center.

The Scholar-Athlete Academic Honors Reception took place May 7 and honored 213 student-athletes. Taking part in the celebration were Interim Director of Athletics, Jo-Ann Nester, Saint Anselm President, Steven DiSalvo, Interim Dean of the College, Mark Cronin, Vice President for Student Affairs, Joseph Horton, Dean of Students, Alicia Finn, Associate Registrar, Father Benet Philips, O.S.B., Director of Admission, Eric Nichols, professor and Faculty Athletic Representative, Montague Brown, and Assistant Director of Campus Ministry, Father Anselm Smedile, O.S.B.

Seven new student-athletes were inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Student-Athlete Honor Society. Men’s soccer senior and natural sciences major, Michael Kearney (East Bridgewater, Mass.), cross country junior and history major Colleen Currier (Londonderry, N.H.), women’s lacrosse junior and nursing major Maria Luongo (Northborough, Mass.), softball junior and accounting major Kasey Moran (Medford, Mass.), baseball junior and economics major Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.), cross country junior and nursing major Frankie Mueller (Northborough, Mass.) and cross country junior and mathematics major Kayla Shannon (Plymouth, Mass.) all achieved grade point averages of 3.4 or higher to earn membership in Chi Alpha Sigma. Student-athletes become eligible for induction in their junior year.

Those eight, along with 205 others, were each recognized for either attaining an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, or achieving a 3.0 or higher in the Spring or Fall semesters of 2013.

Six individuals, who were the recipients of the Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, the Anselmian Athletic Club Student-Athlete of the Year award and the Charles J. Quinn Sportsmanship Award, were recognized at the Celebration of Athletic Excellence on April 27.

The Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year candidates are identified from pre-determined academic criteria – the student-athlete must have maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher, alongside significant academic and athletic credentials, while also serving their community. The award, which was presented by President DiSalvo, was designed to honor and celebrate a male and female student-athlete who demonstrates a commitment to excellence both in the classroom and on the playing surface.

Senior captain Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) of the softball team was selected as the female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year, with senior men’s ice hockey goalie Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) taking home the honor on the male side.

The Anselmian Athletic Club Student-Athlete of the Year award, presented by Horton, was voted upon by coaches and both College and athletic department administration, with the results based upon athletic accomplishments, conference and sport-specific awards and nominations, regional and national awards and nominations along with the student-athlete’s demonstrations of sportsmanship throughout the season.

Junior Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) of the women’s lacrosse team was the female winner, while men’s basketball senior Dino Mallios (Winthrop, Mass.) was the men’s recipient.

The Charles J. Quinn Sportsmanship award, presented at the ceremony by head athletic trainer, Michael Sirois, honors both a male and female student, who best exemplifies and demonstrates the values of sportsmanship both on and off the playing surface. Both student-athletes and the team’s coaches vote for the recipients of this award.

Senior Gina Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) of the softball team was the female recipient of the award, while senior men’s lacrosse captain Griffin Sandler (Burlington, Mass.) was selected as the male recipient of the award.

Prior to the six major award winners being recognized and celebrated, each team’s Most Valuable Players and team captains, as well as Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members, were applauded in a slideshow. Three-year and four-year award winners were recognized and received a gift from the department – three-year winners received a jacket, while four-year winners were given a watch.
