MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Allyn Doyle (Merrimack, N.H.) of the Saint Anselm College women’s cross country team and freshman Andrew Murphy (Franklin, Mass.) of the football team were named Saint Anselm Student-Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sept. 30.
Doyle led the women’s cross country squad to a fourth-place finish at the 27-team Pop Crowell Invitational on Saturday on the campus of Gordon College. The Hawks submitted an average time of 19 minutes, 38.3 seconds, as Doyle guided the way with a time of 18:50.7.
Murphy, who was selected as the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week earlier in the day, had a game to remember in his first collegiate start Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University. After attempting just seven career passes coming into the contest, Murphy completed 29 of 43 tosses for 405 yards and four touchdowns, while throwing just one interception. The 405 yards are the most in program history for a freshman, surpassing Michael Pierce's 397 against the University of New Haven on Oct. 3, 2009, and just three yards short of matching Pierce's overall school record of 408 that he set against Pace University on Sept. 25, 2010. The four touchdowns match Pierce's four he tossed against Plymouth State University on Sept. 5, 2009 for most by a Saint Anselm freshman and are also the most in school history for a true freshman.
Doyle and the women’s cross country squad return to action Sunday, Oct. 7 when they compete at the New England Championships at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.
Murphy and the football team are back on the gridiron Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. when they play host to Bentley University under the lights at Grappone Stadium.
