WINTER PARK, Fla. – Senior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) did not allow an earned run over nine innings and the offense came alive late as the Saint Anselm College baseball team opened its Spring Break Florida trip with a 6-1 triumph against the College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.
The Hawks improve to 1-3 on the young season, while the Golden Knights sink to 0-7.
Saint Rose actually jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second when two Saint Anselm errors led to the game's first run. It stayed 1-0 into the seventh when a single by junior Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) and a walk from classmate Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) set up a two-out, two-run double to left-center by freshman Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.). Following a single to left from senior Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.), sophomore Alan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) came through with a base hit through the left side that stretched the lead to 3-1.
Saint Anselm made it 4-1 in the eighth when senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) belted a double to the gap in left-center, moved to third on a balk and scored on Hayden's grounder to third. The Hawks added two more in the ninth. Freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a Bragole single and scored on a ground out by sophomore Ken Morrissino (East Longmeadow, Mass.) before Bragole scored when senior Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) reached on a two-out error.
Brian (1-1) went the distance, allowing the one unearned run on seven hits, while striking out five and walking two.
Bragole went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Hayden was 1-for-4, drove in a run and scored once.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, March 2 at 6 p.m. when they take on the University of the Sciences at Alfond.
