WINTER PARK, Fla. – Sophomore Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) tossed 7.1 shutout innings and junior Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) homered and drove in three runs, as the Saint Anselm College baseball team posted a 6-0 win against the University of the Sciences on Sunday evening at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.
The Hawks, who have outscored their opponents 12-1 over the last two games, improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Devils dip to 1-2.
Saint Anselm jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when sophomore Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tripled to left to lead off the inning and then crossed the plate on Hayden's one-out grounder to short.
Meanwhile, Hudon was absolutely dealing as he no-hit the Devils through 5.2 innings until Trevor Datz reached on an infield single to break it up.
Hayden gave his pitcher some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth when he smashed a two-out, two-run homer to left to stretch the lead to 3-0. Saint Anselm broke it open a little more in the sixth when it put up three runs.
Freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) singled up the middle to begin the inning and then moved to second on a base hit to right by freshman Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.). Sophomore Thomas Murphy (Chelmsford, Mass.) moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt to third and classmate Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.) followed with a sac fly to right to bring in the first run of the inning. With two on later in the inning, Morrissino singled to center to plate Bragole and then senior Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) came around when the centerfielder misplayed the ball.
Hudon (1-0) allowed just three hits, while striking out six and walking one in his 7.1 innings of work. Freshman Bryan Even (Great Falls, Va.) finished it off as he worked 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits, while striking out one.
Hayden was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Morrisino went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Finnegan was 2-for-3 and crossed the plate once.
The Hawks return to action Monday, March 3 at 7 p.m. when they make the trek across the state take on Eckerd College.
