Baseball Swept by Saint Thomas Aquinas to Close Four-Game Weekend Set

YAPHANK, N.Y. – Freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook Conn.) drove in a pair of runs, including his first career home run, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team was swept by Saint Thomas Aquinas College in doubleheader action Sunday at Baseball Heaven. The Spartans won the first game, 13-3, before capturing the second, 3-1, in seven innings.

The Hawks drop to 6-10 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 6-5.

Saint Anselm moved out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a bases-loaded walk to freshman Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.), but Saint Thomas Aquinas struck back for seven runs in the second against sophomore starter Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.). Two-run singles by Deven Del Priore and Rich Baerga did the major damage.

Omar Cuevas' homer in the fourth made it 8-1, but the Spartans would then post four in the fifth, highlighted by Baerga's two-run double to left to break the game wide open. Del Priore's run-scoring double to left in the sixth made it 13-1.

The Hawks would plate two in the ninth with a pair of two-out hits. Finnegan doubled to right-center to score senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.), who had worked a two-out walk, and then scored himself on a single to right by junior Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.).

Hudon (2-1) allowed seven runs – six earned – on five hits, while striking out one and walking one over 2.0 innings. Freshman Autrey Gates (Pembroke, N.H.) relinquished five runs on seven hits, while fanning four and walking one in 2.2 innings. Sophomore Mack Flynn (Windham, Mass.) worked 0.2 innings and gave up a run on two hits and a walk. Freshman Cameron Latta (Lowell, Mass.) tossed 1.2 shutout innings, allowing just a hit and a walk, while striking out three. Classmate John Lavoie (Medford, Mass.) worked a scoreless frame, striking out one, issuing a walk and giving up a hit.

Morin went 2-for-4 with a walk and knocked in a run, while Bragole was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Lagasse went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run, with Finnegan going 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

In game two, the Hawks again jumped out in front early as Finnegan's solo shot to right to lead off the second made it 1-0.

The Spartans grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning, however, as they took advantage of an error to tie the game and then went up 2-1 on Joe Boland's RBI single to right. Boland came through with another run-scoring single to right in the fourth that stretched the Saint Thomas Aquinas lead to 3-1.

Spartans' starter Anthony Morris, who faced one over the minimum, retired the final 13 batters he faced. He went the distance, allowing a run on two hits, while striking out four and walking none.

Freshman Joseph Levasseur (Rowley, Mass.) worked the first five innings and gave up three runs on five hits, while walking three and recording a strikeout. Sophomore Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) collected the first out of the sixth, while classmate Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass.) nailed down the final two outs to complete the perfect inning.

Finnegan was 1-for-3 with the solo home run, while senior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) was also 1-for-3 with the Hawks' only other hit.
