HAVERHILL, Mass. – Senior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) tossed seven scoreless innings and combined with two other relievers as the Saint Anselm College baseball team shut out Saint Michael's College, 9-0, Tuesday evening at Trinity Stadium.
The Hawks win for the third time in five games to improve to 9-13 on the season, including 3-2 in both the Northeast-10 and the Northeast Division. The Purple Knights, meanwhile, sink to 1-7, 0-2 NE-10, 0-2 NE-10 NE.
Saint Anselm took advantage of some early wildness by Saint Michael's starter Nick Myers, who walked five batters in the opening inning, to push across three runs. A bases loaded ground out to first by senior Matt Wojichowski (Portsmouth, R.I.) began the scoring, before classmate Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) followed with a bases loaded infield single to shortstop to make it 2-0 just two batters later. Sophomore Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) then drew a bases loaded walk to run the lead to 3-0. The Hawks, who walked nine times in the contest, would leave the bags packed in the inning.
Brian continued to deal and Myers settled down, leading to zeroes on the board until Saint Anselm broke it open with a five-run seventh against the Saint Michael's bullpen. The Hawks took advantage of three errors in the frame to plate five unearned runs to widen the gap to 8-0.
The Hawks would tack one more on the eighth as senior Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on a wild pitch just before junior Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) hammered an opposite-field triple to left.
Brian (4-1) pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out three and walking two. Sophomore Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) worked around a pair of hits to toss a scoreless eighth with a strikeout. Freshman Cameron Latta (Lowell, Mass.) finished it with a scoreless and hitless ninth as he also struck out one.
Grumoli was 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Wojichowski was 0-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.; two runs) and freshman Frank D'Amato (Cranston, R.I.; run) were both 1-for-4. Morin was the only other Hawk with a hit as he went 1-for-5 with a run scored. Lluberes was 0-for-2, but walked twice and scored three times, while freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was also 0-for-2 with three walks and a run scored.
The Hawks return to action Thursday, April 3 at 7 p.m. when they play host to Southern New Hampshire University at Trinity Stadium.
