Late Errors Hurt Baseball in 5-1 Loss at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) drove in a run to give his team the early lead and senior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) did not allow an earned run over 6.2 innings, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team was defeated by Bentley University, 5-1, Monday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

The Hawks dip to 12-26 on the season, including 6-15 in Northeast-10 play and 4-11 in the Northeast Division. The Falcons, meanwhile, improve to 19-10, 15-3 NE-10, 11-1 NE-10 NE.

Finnegan delivered the game's first run in the top of the first when he singled to right to score senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.), who drew a two-out walk and stole second.

The 1-0 lead would hold up until the bottom of the seventh when a pair of two-out errors allowed the tying run to score and also set up an RBI single to left from Burton Deady and a run-scoring triple to left by Will Brennan that put Bentley on top, 3-1.

The Falcons grabbed two more in the eighth on an RBI single to right from Bryan Rocha and Saint Anselm's third error of the afternoon.

Lagasse would double with two outs in the ninth, but was stranded there.

Brian (4-4) was charged with three runs – all unearned – on five hits, while striking out seven and walking five over 6.2 innings. Sophomore Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) retired the only batter he faced to end the seventh. Freshman Cameron Latta (Lowell, Mass.) allowed two runs – one earned – on a hit and a walk in 0.1 innings, while sophomore Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) gave up just a walk in 0.2 innings.

Finnegan was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Lagasse went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored. Freshman Frank D'Amato (Cranston, R.I.) had the only other hit for the Hawks as he was 1-for-3.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m. when they take on Division I-foe Dartmouth College. The next home game for the Hawks is Wednesday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to Franklin Pierce University at Sullivan Park.
