Baseball Doubled Up at Dartmouth, 16-8

HANOVER, N.H. – Senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) and freshman Jon McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) each went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to Division I-foe Dartmouth College, 16-8, Tuesday afternoon at Biondi Park.

The Hawks drop to 12-27 on the season, while the Big Green improve to 13-19.

Saint Anselm jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI triple to center from Lagasse and a run-scoring single up the middle by senior Matt Wojichowski (Portsmouth, R.I.).

Dartmouth grabbed one back in the bottom of the frame on Thomas Roulis' sacrifice fly to center, but the Hawks tacked on two more in the third. Junior Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) scored the first run of the inning when he scored after freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) singled to center and the centerfielder misplayed the ball. McQuarrie followed with an RBI double down the left field line to put the Hawks on top, 4-1.

The Big Green used a six-run bottom of the third, however, to take the lead for good. Roulis' two-run triple to right-center off freshman starter Bryan Even (Great Falls, Va.), who only allowed a run on three hits through the first two innings, started things up before Dustin Selzer came through with an RBI single up the middle to tie it at four. Two more came in on an RBI single to left by Michael Ketchmark, including one after the ball was misplayed. Matt MacDowell's sac fly to center closed the scoring in the inning with Dartmouth on top, 7-4.

After another run-scoring single for Selzer put the hosts up four in the fourth, Finnegan's RBI single to left-center and McQuarrie's sac fly to left sliced it to 8-6 in the fifth.

Dartmouth busted it wide open by hanging an eight-spot in the fifth, however. Nick Lombardi's two-out grand slam to left delivered the big blow that stretched it to 16-6.

Lagasse plated a run with a double to left-center in the sixth and sophomore Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) grounded out to second in the seventh to push another run across and end the scoring.

Lagasse (two walks, run) and Jon McQuarrie (two RBI) were both 2-for-4, while Finnegan was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Wojichowski went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and run scored.

Even (0-1) wound up allowing seven runs – six earned – on eight hits in 2.1 innings. Freshman Autrey Gates (Pembroke, N.H.) gave up one run on two hits in 1.2 innings. Junior Ryan Cosmopulos (Seekonk, Mass.) was charged with six runs on four hits and two walks in 0.2, with freshman Mack Flynn (Windham, N.H.) relinquishing two runs on a hit and two walks in 1.1 innings. Freshman Jon Lavoie (Medford, Mass.) ran his scoreless innings streak to 9.0 as he allowed just one hit in a scoreless seventh. Sophomore Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) mirrored Lavoie's outing in the eighth as he struck out one.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to Franklin Pierce University at Sullivan Park.
