Baseball’s Late Charge Quieted By Saint Michael’s in 8-4 Loss

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in two runs and for the second straight game the Saint Anselm College baseball team plated four runs in the ninth inning, but Saint Michael's College held on for an 8-4 victory Thursday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field.

The Hawks drop to 12-29 on the season, including 6-17 in Northeast-10 play and 4-13 in the Northeast Division. The Purple Knights improve to 4-22, 3-16 NE-10, 2-13 NE-10 NE.

Saint Michael's jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first against sophomore Clayton Welch (Manchester, N.H.). RBI singles from Alec Tice and George Buteau made it 2-0 before Nicky Elderton delivered the big blow with a three-run shot to right-center.

Tyler Wild helped stretch the lead to 7-0 in the fourth when he came through with a run-scoring single to left and later scored on a two-out wild pitch. Don McGuirl's sacrifice fly to right in the eighth nudged the lead to 8-0.

Saint Anselm finally made it onto the board in the ninth when freshman Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) delivered an RBI single to center that scored sophomore Thomas Murphy (Chelmsford, Mass.), who led off the inning with a walk. With the bases loaded later in the frame, Lagasse singled to right to bring in a pair of runs and make it an 8-3 ballgame. A two-out fielding error led to the fourth run of the stanza, but a fielder's choice grounder ended it with the tying run waiting on deck.

Welch (2-7) relinquished seven runs on nine hits, while striking out three and walking one over 3.1 innings. Sophomore Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) gave up just a hit in 1.2 shutout innings, while classmate Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass.) only allowed a walk in 2.0 hitless frames. Sophomore Mack Flynn (Windham, N.H.) was charged with one run on one hit and a walk in 1.0 inning.

Lagasse was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI, while Murphy went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored. Bragole (walk, RBI) and sophomore Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.; two walks, run) were both 1-for-3.

Dylan Lavery tossed 7.0 shutout innings for the Purple Knights as he scattered four hits and struck out six, while working around seven walks.
