Assumption Thwarts Baseball’s Senior Day Comeback

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) and freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) hit home runs late to pull the Saint Anselm College baseball team within a run, but Assumption College held off the late charge to slip away with an 8-6 victory on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Park on Senior Day. The second game was postponed due to inclement weather and declining field conditions.

The Hawks drop to 12-30 on the season, including 6-18 in Northeast-10 play and 4-14 within the Northeast Division. The Greyhounds improve to 15-17, 9-14 NE-10, 6-9 NE-10 NE.

Assumption grabbed the game's first run when Ysander Figueroa led off the contest by doubling to left center off senior Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.), moving to third on a Michael Panza groundout to first and scored on Billy Johnson's sacrifice fly to center.

The Greyhounds then capitalized on a pair of Saint Anselm errors to score six runs in the third. Mike Coggeshall delivered the big blow with a two-run double to left-center that made it 6-0 at the time.

Finnegan's RBI double to left in the fourth cut it to 7-1, while a run-scoring single to center in the fifth by senior Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) trimmed the deficit to five. The Hawks then crafted a two-out rally in the seventh as senior Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.) walked and Grumoli was hit by a pitch before Lagasse crushed a three-run, opposite-field homer to left-center that sliced the Assumption lead to 7-5. Finnegan's one-out bomb to left in the eighth made it 7-6.

Assumption plated an insurance run in the ninth on back-to-back doubles by Bret Clark and Figueroa. In the bottom of the frame, Grumoli was again hit by a pitch and walks to senior Matt Wojichowski (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Finnegan loaded the bases with two outs, but Figueroa induced a fly out to center to end it and earn his fifth save.

Brian (4-5) went the distance as he allowed eight runs – three earned – on 10 hits, while striking out three and not walking a batter.

Finnegan went 2-for-4 with a walk, pair of RBI and a run scored, while Lagasse was 1-for-5 with three RBI and a run. Grumoli went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m. when they take on Assumption at Bentley University's DeFelice Field.
