MANCHESTER, N.H. – Billy Johnson clubbed a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to give Assumption College an early lead in a game they would eventually win 10-1 against the Saint Anselm College baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Park.
The Hawks drop to 12-31 on the season, including 6-19 in Northeast-10 play and 4-15 within the Northeast Division. The Greyhounds improve to 16-18, 10-14 NE-10, 7-9 NE-10 NE.
Junior Dave Kent (North Falmouth, Mass.) gave up a lead-off walk to Ysander Figueroa, followed by a Colin Clancy single to left, before Johnson swatted his home run to right to stake Assumption to a 3-0 lead. RBI singles in the second inning from Figueroa and Johnson extended the lead to 5-0, before another run-scoring single from Figueroa nudged the lead to six in the third.
Tom Paine's two-run double highlighted a three-run seventh for the Greyhounds, who would run their lead to 10-0 in the eighth on Greg O'Donnell's RBI base hit.
Saint Anselm would push across its lone run in the bottom of the frame when Freshman MacNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led off with a single through the left side, advanced to second on a groundout by freshman Frank D'Amato (Cranston, R.I.) and scored when junior Bobby Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass.) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Kent (1-3) relinquished nine runs – seven earned – on 10 hits, while striking out four and walking one over 6.2 innings. Freshman Autrey Gates (Pembroke, N.H.) allowed one run on four hits and fanned a pair in 1.1 innings. Freshman John Lavoie (Medford, Mass.) gave up just a walk in a hitless ninth and has now gone 12.0 innings without allowing an earned run.
Anthony Perry gave up just one unearned run over 8.0 innings for Assumption.
