Hudon Pitches Baseball Past Saint Michael’s, 1-0

RINDGE, N.H. – Junior Tom Hudon (Merrimack, N.H.) came out on the better end of a fantastic pitcher's duel Wednesday night as he hurled a complete-game shutout and struck out a career-high 12 batters to lead the Saint Anselm College baseball team to a 1-0 victory against Saint Michael's College at Franklin Pierce University's Pappas Field.

The Hawks win their second straight to improve to 5-10 on the season, including 2-0 in Northeast-10 play and 1-0 in the Northeast Division, while the Purple Knights drop to 4-8, 0-1 NE-10, 0-1 NE-10 NE.

After a scoreless five-and-a-half innings of a game that took just two hours and 12 minutes to play, the Hawks finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth when senior Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) led off the frame with a double to right-center and then scored when classmate Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) stroked a single to right.

Saint Michael's threatened to tie it in the eighth, but was undone in a crazy turn of events. With two outs and Drew Salk on second, Michael Dougherty dumped a base hit into left that fell between the shortstop and left fielder. Dougherty darted for second to try and draw a throw as Salk came around to tie the game. The umpire at home waved off the run, however, as Salk had missed touching the plate and Dougherty was tagged out at second before Salk could scamper back.

Hudon (1-3), who produced four 1-2-3 frames in total, made sure there was no wackiness in the ninth as he set down the Purple Knights in order. Hudon allowed three hits, while striking out the 12 batters and walking just one in 9.0 innings.

Hayden went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Morin (RBI) and freshman Max Wadington (Burlington, Conn.; walk) and John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each were 1-for-3. Junior Ken Morrisino (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) was 1-for-4.

Dylan Lavery (1-2) allowed one run on six hits, while striking out 14 and walking just one over 7.0 innings.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, March 28 (4:30/7:30 p.m.) when they take on Southern New Hampshire University in doubleheader action at Pappas Field.
