RINDGE, N.H. – Freshman Max Wadington (Burlington, Conn.) and senior Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) each drove in a run, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision to fifth-ranked Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday afternoon at Pappas Field.
The Hawks have their two-game winning streak snapped as they fall to 5-11 on the season, including 2-1 in Northeast-10 play and 1-1 in the Northeast Division. The Ravens improve to 22-2, 5-1 NE-10, 3-1 NE-10 NE.
Saint Anselm jumped on the board first in the top of the third inning when Wadington delivered a two-out single to center that plated fellow freshman Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J.), who singled earlier in the inning.
Franklin Pierce moved ahead in the bottom of the frame when Justin Brock hit a two-run homer to left off senior starter Dave Kent (N. Falmouth, Mass.). A sacrifice fly from Matt O'Herron and a two-run single to right by Kurtis White in the fourth added three unearned runs to stretch the lead to 5-1.
Brock's second two-run shot of the day made it 7-1 in the seventh before Hayden was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to cut the deficit to 7-2. The Ravens answered that run in similar fashion in the bottom of the inning as Brock was also hit by a pitch with the bases packed.
Kent (0-4) allowed seven runs – four earned – on seven hits, while striking out six and walking two in 6.1 innings. Sophomore Cameron Latta (Lowell, Mass.) was charged with a run on three hits in 1.0 inning of work, while junior Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.) walked one in a scoreless 0.2 innings.
Wadington (RBI, walk), Hayden (RBI) and sophomore Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; run) were all 1-for-3, while Carpenter was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Paul Covelle went the first 7.1 innings for the Ravens, allowing two runs – one earned – on five hits, while striking out four and walking a pair.
The Hawks return to action Thursday, April 2 (10 a.m./1 p.m.) when they take on Assumption College in doubleheader action at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass.
