SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but could not hang on as Saint Leo University defeated the Hawks 10-3 on Monday night in a non-conference game in Saint Leo, Fla.
The Hawks fall to 1-6 with the setback while Saint Leo improves to 8-7 with the victory.
Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs with a two-run double in the top of the first and ended the day 1-for-4. Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J.) also registered a pair of hits while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Ken Morrisino (East Longmeadow, Mass.) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass.) pitched 5.2 innings and allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in the defeat. Andy Williams (Merrimack, N.H.) gave up four runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work, while Jonathan Dunn (Nashua, N.H.) struck out the side in his one inning of work.
Bragole's two-run double opened the scoring as the Hawks took a 2-0 lead into the second inning. Saint Anselm pushed one more run across in the top of the second as Matthew Flynn (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to 3-0.
The Saint Leo offense woke up in the bottom of the second as Chase Turner blasted a two-run homerun that cut the deficit to 3-2. The Lions added four runs in the third on an RBI single by Lane Stancil, a sac fly from Mike Mann and a two-run homer from Alex Mata. Saint Leo plated two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth inning to give the game its final score of 10-3.
Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Eckerd College for another 6:00 p.m. game.
