Baseball swept by Stonehill despite Morrisino's five hits

MANCHESTER, N.H.Ken Morrisino was a combined 5-for-11 at the plate but the Saint Anselm College baseball team was swept by visiting Stonehill by scores of 11-6 in 12 innings and 9-2 in Northeast-10 play on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Park.

Stonehill (17-12, 6-6 NE-10) exploded for five runs in the top of the 12th after Saint Anselm (7-22, 3-10 NE-10) sent the game to extra innings with a four-run bottom of the eighth. The teams combined for 27 hits and 10 errors in the game, which took nearly four hours.

The Skyhawks plated single runs in the first and fifth to lead 2-0 after six innings. The Hawks fought back to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a RBI single by Nick Bragole and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dan Bodi.

Stonehill came right back with four runs in the top of the eighth, getting run-scoring hits from Brian Hocking, Eddie Bowler, Alexander Joyce and Ben Monte to go ahead 6-2. However, Saint Anselm tied the game once again with a four-run bottom of the eighth.

Jon McQuarrie hit his first-career home run to lead off the inning and the Hawks took advantage of four Stonehill errors to score three more runs. Paul Trabucco also had a RBI single in the eighth-inning rally.

The score remained even at 6-6 until the top of the 12th when Stonehill plated five runs on five hits to go back ahead. Harrison Sabo knocked in the game-winning run with a bunt single and Joyce followed with a three-run home run to left to give the Skyhawks some breathing room.

Sabo was 4-for-5 with three runs and one RBI, Joyce was 3-for-5 with a run and four RBI and Monte was 3-for-6 with a run and two RBI for Stonehill. Four Saint Anselm hitters had two hits apiece. Morrisino was 2-for-6 with two runs and three stolen bases, Trabucco was 2-for-5 with a walk, two runs and one RBI.

Stonehill reliever Aubrey Solomon picked up the win with 3.1 innings of one-run ball with three walks and six strikeouts. Tyler Buck worked the first eight innings for the Hawks, Seve Llanio followed with a scoreless ninth and Zane Byrne threw the final three innings and took the loss.

Saint Anselm scored two first-inning runs but Stonehill rallied in the middle innings to take game two 9-2 and complete the sweep. The Skyhawks scored five in the fifth and three in the sixth and got eight solid innings out of starter Jeremy Roberts.

After his home run in game one, McQuarrie highlighted a two-run first inning for Saint Anselm with a two-run double to left after the Hawks loaded the bases on singles by Morrisino, Bragole and Shaine Carpenter.

Stonehill's Steve Lee led off the fourth with a solo home run to left as part of a 4-for-5 performance in the nightcap to cut the visitor's deficit in half. The Skyhawks plated five runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead with Brian Hocking's three-run home run as the big hit of the inning.

Stonehill tacked on three more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to seven runs. Justin Nicklas started the scoring with a sacrifice fly, Monte followed with a RBI double and Chris Hoyt later singled up the middle to score Monte.

Roberts allowed 10 hits in eight innings but gave up just two runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Ryan Murray pitched a scoreless ninth.

Andy Williams fanned a career-high seven in six innings for Saint Anselm but allowed nine runs (six earned) on eight hits. Adam Krol threw three shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Morrisino was 3-for-5 with a run scored, while McQuarrie and Matthew Flynn each had a pair of hits in the loss.

The same two teams complete the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 17. First pitch is set for noon at Sullivan Park.
