Marculitis goes deep, Baseball falls to #5 SNHU

MANCHESTER, N.H.John Marculitis went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homerun, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to #5-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup that doubled as the final regular season Queen City Cup battle between the two squads this year.

Saint Anselm dips to 10-28 and 5-18 in the NE10, while the Penmen improve to 30-7 and 16-2 in league games. The Hawks are back in action this weekend when they host Merrimack College for a double header on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.

Nick Bragole also added a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Colin Rios and Jason Turner each went 1-for-4, with Turner adding an RBI, while Jon McQuarrie and Aaron Crandall were both 1-for-3. Connor Parent added a base hit in his lone appearance as a pinch hitter.

John Lavoie pitched six innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Preston Yerrington and Max Hall each gave up two runs on two hits in an inning pitched.

The heart of the Penmen order did all of the damage for SNHU as hitters 4-7 combined to go 8-for-16 with six runs scored and all nine RBI. Ryan Sullivan was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, while Caleb Potter went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Jake Stearns earned his fifth win of the season while giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work for the Penmen.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fourth, Marculitis doubled to left center and the Hawks put runners on the corners when Colin Rios singled to shortstop. Jason Turner picked up the first RBI of the day for Saint Anselm with a groundout as the Hawks trimmed the lead to 3-1.

The Penmen answered with two runs in their half of the fifth on back-to-back RBI hits from Potter and Robert Fulkerson to take a 5-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Bragole stroked a one-out single up the middle before Marculitis homered to left center to drive in a pair and make it a two-run game again at 5-3. Potter responded with a two-run homerun of his own in the bottom of the seventh, and Sullivan launched another two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 9-3 game.

Connor Parent singled in the bottom of the ninth, but the Penmen got a double play to end the game and close out the Hawks.
