HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team was defeated, 7-0, by Le Moyne College as the Dolphins scored six runs over the first two innings on Sunday.
With Saint Anselm (2-1) coming off a sweep of East Stroudsburg to open its season the day before, Le Moyne (3-1) starter Ryan Murphy held the Hawks to four hits over eight shutout innings while striking out five. Senior John Marculitis was 2-for-4 at the plate for Saint Anselm, recording two of his team's five hits.
Junior Oscar Larranaga, junior Colin Rios and senior Dan Bodi had a hit apiece for the Hawks, with Larranaga's fourth-inning single serving as his first-career hit as a Hawk. Four Dolphins had a pair of hits in the game, led by Brian Cox, who was 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, one RBI and two runs scored.
Le Moyne took advantage of four walks in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on a throwing error on a double steal after back-to-back walks to start the frame. The Dolphins pounded five hits in a five-run second to extend their lead to 6-0. In the big second inning, Cox and Nick Place had RBI doubles for Le Moyne, while Andrew Taft and JT Pittman each drove in runs with singles.
Saint Anselm had runners in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth, but could not take advantage. Larranaga and Marculitis knocked consecutive singles with two outs in the fourth, only to be left there. Bodi singled to right and moved up on a wild pitch with one out in the fifth before Murphy retired the next two batters.
Five pitchers worked in the game for the Hawks, including Griffin St. Onge, who threw two innings of scoreless relief in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Jared Ferris fanned two in 1.1 innings of one-hit ball to record the final four outs.
Saint Anselm travels to the University of the Sciences next weekend, Feb. 24-25. The two teams will play a 12/2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a single game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
