AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team was defeated by the Mavericks from Minnesota State University at Mankato on Sunday morning by a 7-5 margin.
Saint Anselm evens its overall record at 4-4 while the Mavericks improve to 2-3 on the season. The Hawks will play Lewis at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Mar. 5 at Lake Myrtle Park field number four.
Tyler McKeon drove himself in with a home run to left field in the bottom of the second and John Marculitis had an RBI single in the bottom of the third, but the Mavericks leapt out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning - a bases-loaded hit by pitch preceded a sacrifice fly to account for the early Mavericks runs.
Mankato put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs to place the Hawks into a 7-2 hole following an RBI double, RBI groundout, RBI single and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
Oscar Larranaga drove in two runs with a single in the bottom half of the fifth inning and later scored on a Connor Parent RBI single, but the big fifth inning by the Mavericks proved to be the difference-maker.
Will Conaton pitched four innings for Saint Anselm, allowing four earned runs on four hits. Jared Ferris drew the loss, yielding three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Zane Byrne pitched four-and-a-third scoreless innings, striking out three batters and giving up only four hits.
Cam Kline was the victor for Minnesota State Mankato despite five runs crossing the plate under his supervision. Carlo Graffeo pitched just under five innings of scoreless relief, striking out eight Hawks while only being touched for three hits.
