Baseball on losing end of back-and-forth affair with Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team erased a three-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Greyhounds from Assumption College were able to pick up a 9-7 victory in 12 innings on Saturday at Sullivan Park.

Box Score

Saint Anselm dips to 7-10 on the year, having lost three of its first four Northeast-10 Conference fixtures. Assumption moves to 9-14 overall and to 3-3 within league play. The Hawks and Greyhounds will play two games on Monday, Apr. 2 beginning at high noon.

Down by a 6-3 margin in the home half of the ninth inning, Saint Anselm rallied to tie the game at six with two outs in the frame. John Marculitis led off the inning with a single and Jason Turner followed with a double to left field, advancing Tyler McKeon (who erased Marculitis on a fielder's choice) to third base.

Following a strikeout by the Hawks, Max Wadington walked to load the bases for left fielder Aaron Crandall. The senior outfielder drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring a run and setting the stage for late-game dramatics. The next batter, Oscar Larranaga, singled to left field and drove in both Wadington and Turner to tie the game at six.

With one out in the top of the 12th inning, Kevin Quinlivan doubled to center field and later scored on a Dillon Zona pinch-hit single up the middle. Following a Dillon Koster walk, Quinn Moynihan stroked a two-out double to right center field that drove in Koster and Zona to create a three-run lead in extra innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning, the Hawks did not go quietly as Connor Parent slugged the first home run of his career, a majestic shot to right field in front of the Saint Anselm scoreboard. Dan Bodi singled following Parent's blast, placing the tying run at the plate for the Hawks, but Assumption was able to end the game on a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop.

Hunter Tralli homered for Assumption in the top of the second inning, plating two runs, before Bodi's RBI triple halved the visitor's advantage – the Hawks first baseman drove in Parent, who led off the inning with a double, to cut the Assumption lead to 2-1. An RBI single by Andrew Jaehnig created a 3-1 lead for Assumption in the top of the fifth inning.

The Hawks scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings as Bodi's infield single to third base with two outs plated Larranaga and a Wadington RBI double scored Turner in the very next inning.

Jaehnig stroked a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning before the Hawks were able to draw the game even in the bottom of the stanza.

Adam Krol kept the Hawks in the game, pitching seven innings while striking out six batters and walking two. Will Conaton did not allow an earned run across two innings, fanning two Assumption batters. Zane Byrne drew the loss, pitching three innings and allowing three earned runs.

Assumption hurlers combined to allow seven earned runs on the day, striking out six batters. Manny Peguero-Melo earned the win for the Greyhounds, allowing only two hits in the final three innings and striking out two batters.
