MARSHFIELD, Mass. – Freshmen Matthew Butigian and Will Conaton of the Saint Anselm College team were selected to the Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team after outstanding performances in their first season on the Hilltop.
The duo are the first Hawks to be selected to the All-Rookie team since current junior JJ Dunn in 2016. Saint Anselm has never had more than one selection to the league's All-Rookie team since its inception in 2009.
Butigian led the team in batting average, hitting at a .325 clip across 35 games for Saint Anselm. He also picked up seven doubles and a triple while driving in 15 runs for the Hawks. His .432 on-base percentage also led the Hawks as he walked (18) more times than he struck out (16). He also led the Hawks with 12 multiple-hit games in 2018.
After a 2-for-2 performance in his collegiate debut against East Stroudsburg on Feb. 17, Butigian had three-separate hit streaks five games or longer. In his final streak of six games that spanned from Apr. 28 to May 4, Butigian hit .440 with 11 hits in 25 at-bats – he also drove in at least one run in five of the season's final six games.
Conaton made 10 appearances on the mound for Saint Anselm, throwing 28.1 innings while striking out 23 batters. Pitching to the tune of a 4.13 earned run average, Conaton allowed one run or less in seven innings of work in two of his four starts for the Hawks.
He secured his first career pitching victory for the Hawks against Stonehill on Apr. 30, striking out five of the first six batters he faced and finished the day with only one earned run allowed.
