WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the host Greyhounds from Assumption College rallied back to down the Hawks by a 9-4 score on Sunday.
Saint Anselm falls to 6-26, having lost 15 of its first 17 games against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Assumption, ranked ninth in the most recent East Region poll by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association, improves to 21-14 overall and to 9-8 against NE10 opponents.
The Hawks and Greyhounds will play on Tuesday, Apr. 23 at 3:30 p.m. from Rocheleau Field, completing the three-game series.
The Greyhounds racked up 13 hits on the day and a tandem of Assumption hurlers kept the Hawks to only five total hits. Derek Adamson and Dillon Koster each racked up three hits for the hosts with the latter driving in three runs on the day.
Senior Tyler McKeon (Rutland, Mass.) led off the game with a hit by pitch, eventually scoring on a booming RBI double by classmate Oscar Larranaga (Tucson, Ariz.). With two outs in the inning, Larranaga came around to score after a throwing error by the Assumption pitcher, creating a 2-0 lead before the Greyhounds came up to bat.
Assumption took the lead for good in the home half of the fourth inning, plating four runs on four hits. With a runner on first and two outs, a walk preceded three consecutive hits that led to the hosts' big inning. Three straight hits in the sixth inning led to Assumption's fifth run, creating a 5-2 lead for the Greyhounds.
After an error by the Hawks put a runner on base that eventually scored in the bottom of the seventh inning, Assumption tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning with, once again, three consecutive base hits.
The Hawks scored twice in the top of the ninth inning as a bases-loaded walk by freshman Nick Berry (Beverly, Mass.) and a McKeon single to center each drove in a run. Saint Anselm left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning.
Senior JJ Dunn (Nashua, N.H.) lasted only three innings, giving up five hits and striking out two batters. Freshman Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) came on in relief, yielding only one earned run in three-and-two-thirds innings. Junior Ryan Schworer (Medfield, Mass.) struck out two batters in two-thirds of an inning, but gave up three earned runs. Sophomore Danny Graceffa (Duxbury, Mass.) completed the bottom of the eighth inning, getting two outs.
Sophomore James McNamara earned the win for Assumption, striking out five batters in seven complete innings. Junior Kyle Autilio fanned three batters in two innings of relief.
