DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore QB Yianni Gavalas (Manhasset, N.Y.) of the Saint Anselm College football team earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors for the period ending Nov. 9, the league office announced Tuesday evening.
Gavalas, who garnered the accolade for the third time this season, was also chosen as one of five National D2 Quarterbacks of the Week by Beyond Sports Network (BSN) and was selected as the Northeast-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Gavalas accounted for four touchdowns, including a 48-yard pass as time expired to lift Saint Anselm to Saturday afternoon's heart-stopping 37-34 road victory against New Haven, which helped the Hawks match the program record for wins and lock in their first winning season in 14 years. Gavalas aided in snapping the Chargers' six-game winning streak as he finished 42 of 56 for 439 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 40 yards and another score on 13 carries. The 439 yards are the third most in a single game in school history, while the 479 yards of total offense are the fourth most. Gavalas used the performance to help set new single-season program records in both passing yards and total offense.
Gavalas shared the award with Mercyhurst College junior QB Brendan Boylan.
The fifth-seeded Hawks wrap up their season Saturday, Nov. 15 at noon when they play host to No. 6 Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 Championship Weekend tilt at Grappone Stadium.
