MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior quarterback Eric Fairweather (Londonderry, N.H.) and senior linebacker Zack Mercer (Melrose, Mass.) were named captains of the Saint Anselm College football program on Wednesday in advance of the 2018 season.
Fairweather will enter his second season as a team captain while Mercer, a first-time captain, will follow in the footsteps of his brother, Eric, who was one of four captains for the 2017 squad. The duo will lead Saint Anselm into its 20th season of modern-era varsity football in 2018.
"I would like to congratulate Eric and Zack on being selected as captains," said Head Coach Joe Adam. "They have demonstrated great leadership this past year, holding themselves and their teammates to the highest of standards.
"We look to them to provide guidance and encouragement while being great role models off the field and on campus. We are excited to see them lead the team in our 20th modern-day season," concluded Adam.
The first two-year captain for the Hawks since Andrew Lebowitz '15, Fairweather led the team in passing (771) and rushing (761) yards in 2017. The Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team pick in 2015 is currently the team's all-time leader in yards per carry (5.48) heading into his senior campaign on the Hilltop.
Mercer has appeared in 27 games for the Hawks as a junior, including a career-high 10 games last season. He posted 25 total tackles for the Hawks and forced a fumble against Southern Connecticut State on Nov. 4. Across his career, Mercer has registered 36 tackles, 18 of the solo and assisted variety.
In 2018, the Hawks will play a nine-game schedule, all against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Saint Anselm will play host to two night games, the first at Grappone Stadium since the 2013 football season.
Saint Anselm begins its 20th modern-day season by welcoming Stonehill to the Hilltop for a showdown under the lights on Saturday, Sept. 8. The Hawks and Skyhawks will meet in the 14th annual "Battle for the Ol' Bronze Hawk" at 6 p.m. at Grappone Stadium.
Admittance to home football games is $5.00 for general admission while Saint Anselm students, faculty, staff and children are free of charge with valid identification.
