MANSFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Christian Matthews-Byrd (Saddle Brook, N.J.) of the Saint Anselm College football team was selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday after an outstanding individual performance in his team's narrow loss to Bentley on Saturday.
Matthews-Byrd racked up 194 rushing yards against the Falcons on 32 carries, posting the sixth-most yards on the ground by any Hawks student-athlete since the program's inception. His 32 carries were the fifth-most in a single game and he helped Saint Anselm post 229 rushing yards as a team, the most in any game since the 2016 season.
Appearing in seven games as a freshman, Matthews-Byrd has posted 264 rushing yards on the season, averaging 4.1 yards per sprint. He recorded his first career touchdown against American International on Sept. 22, hauling in a 30-yard pass from Hawks signal-caller Eric Fairweather (Londonderry, N.H.) en route to his team's 29-21 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Monday's announcement makes Matthews-Byrd only his team's third NE10 Rookie of the Week pick since the start of the 2014 season.
