WACO, Texas – Senior CJ Miller (Clinton, Md.) of the Saint Anselm College football team picked up First Team All-America honors on defense from the American Football Coaches Association on Tuesday.
Miller becomes the first All-America pick from the AFCA in team history and the organization's first NE10 representative on defense since the 2009 season. He becomes the first-ever linebacker from the league to be honored by the AFCA.
To date, Miller has been picked as the NE10 Defensive Player of the Year while earning First Team All-Conference honors after the season. He also secured All-New England honors from the New England Football Writers Association on Nov. 25.
A key member of the Hawks defense, Miller helped Saint Anselm to its first three-game winning streak in five seasons and finishing just one victory shy of matching the team record for NE10 victories. The Hawks also played the conference's toughest schedule with its opponents combining for 52 victories at year's end.
Miller and the Hawks knocked off two of the top teams in the NE10 this season, according to the league's annual Preseason Coaches' Poll. New Haven, toppled by Saint Anselm by a 37-31 score on Oct. 12, was projected to finish atop the conference standings with Assumption right behind in second place. Cumulatively, Saint Anselm defeated three of the league's top five programs in 2019.
Miller led the NE10 with 9.7 tackles per game, on average, and finished with 107 to his credit in 2019. He also led the league in sacks with 10.5 to his credit, racking up a total of 93 yards lost on quarterback takedowns. He also executed 14 tackles for a combined loss of 100 yards while forcing three fumbles and logging two interceptions.
His 0.27 forced fumbles per game topped the NE10 and he also led the conference in sacks per game (0.95), the latter statistic ranking 11th in all of NCAA Division II this season. His 1.3 tackles for a loss per game is the conference's third-best figure, as is his 5.3 solo tackles per contest.
Miller recorded seven double-digit tackle games in 2019 and tabulated at least one sack in all but two games on the season. He logged at least six solo tackles in each of his final four career games and notched 30 tackles against perennial NE10-power Assumption across two games on the season.
Among active NCAA Division II student-athletes, Miller's 145 assisted tackles stand as the 19th most in the nation and his 282 career tackles place him in the top-25. In all-time Hawks history, Miller ranks third all-time in assisted tackles and fourth in total tackles.
He was a Third Team All-NE10 selection in 2018 and won NE10 Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28.
