Field Hockey slips past Assumption in double-overtime, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – Saint Anselm College freshman Michelle Lemelin (Chelsea, Maine) picked the perfect time to net her first career goal as she found the back of the net 2:42 into the second overtime to give the Hawks a 1-0 win over Assumption College on Thursday night in Worcester, Mass.

The Hawks were awarded a penalty corner early in the second extra stanza as the ball was played up top to Mia Vecchione (Chelmsford, Mass.). The junior made a move to her left and played a backhanded shot that made its way through the Greyhounds defense and was tipped home on the open net by Lemelin.

Saint Anselm improves to 2-1 on the year, while Assumption drops to 0-2. The Hawks return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Franklin Pierce University at 1 p.m.

The visitors held a 40-6 advantage in shots in the game, including a 21-2 edge in shots on goal, while attempting all 17 penalty corners. Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) made a pair of saves in 87:42 of action to improve to 2-1 this season. Assumption's Sarah Bodzinski recorded 19 saves on the night in defeat.

Saint Anselm dominated play in the first half as they took 11 shots compared to just one for the home team. The Hawks continued their strong play in the second period, outshooting Assumption 18-4 in the half, but could not find the back of the net and the game spilled into overtime.

In the first overtime, Saint Anselm kept up the pressure by taking nine shots on frame compared to just one for Assumption. The Hawks thought they had the game-winner midway through the first overtime as a shot was tipped home, but the goal was waived off by the officials, and the clock ran out on first extra period.

The Hawks worked the ball deep into Assumption territory early in the second overtime, eventually earning the corner that would set up Lemelin's heroics.
